The information that follows is intended to assist you in orchestrating a successful move
Helpful Information to Assist You
In Buying or Selling a Home

Should you hire a commercial mover
or move and pack yourself?
As a guide, a professional mover will save you time and effort, but will cost you three times more than doing it yourself.
If you decide to use a commercial moving company, choose carefully well in advance. Compare services and costs. Above all, make sure they are available on your date to move.
Professional moving costs are based upon weight, not mass. Therefore, it is important to obtain at least three bids which are not to exceed figures. This means that if the actual weight exceeds the estimate, you are not charged for the overage, unless you have added additional furnishings or items to the original shipment.
Check off items as you
review or complete them.
Make an inventory of all possessions
that will be moved.
A good idea would be to video tape or photograph the items. Noting the condition of each item will make it easier to determine if any damage occurred while moving.
Consider arranging to have the
commercial mover pack and/or crate
fragile items.
There is an additional charge; however, they will then assume total responsibility for any possible damage.
Label the contents of all cartons
and boxes on two sides.
Number each box and keep a master list of the contents. This insures that each box can be put right where you want it without first having to unpack each box.
Label all keys to correspond with
tags on trunks and suitcases.
Tape tops of bottles and medicines.
Take along an old telephone book, in case
you need a quick and handy reference.
Reduce your inventory by holding a garage sale
well in advance of moving.
This will also reduce the cost of moving and the amount of packing necessary. This is a great time to sort out items that are not necessary!
Children can also sort out books and toys they may no longer need or use and can sell them along with your household items.
Donate excess items to
various charities and hospitals.
The Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries, Volunteers of America and local shelters can be called to pick up old furniture, books, clothing, etc. These items, with a receipt, are a possible tax-deductible contribution.
Ask your doctors, dentists, lawyers, or relocation specialists, to recommend
professional services
convenient to your new location.
MAKE CERTAIN YOU DO NOT PACK ITEMS & DOCUMENTS NECESSARY FOR CLOSING OR FOR SCHOOL REGISTRATION.
Arrange for a transfer of the following:
School records
Legal documents
Charge Accounts
Medical Records
Memberships
Financials
Contact your attorney to review
and/or update your will.
Obtain health innoculation certificates for pets.
Remember to notify and provide
your change of address to:
Relatives and Friends
Post Office
State Income Tax Board
Banks/Investment brokers
Credit Card Companies
Banks
Alumni Associations
Make sure, prior to moving, that you have picked up all dry-cleaning and repair shop items. Check your records to see if any deposits or refunds are due.
Assemble a moving kit to help at departure and arrivalscrewdriver, tape measure, scissors, cleaning products, hammer and nails, flashlight, scotch/packing tape, paper towels.
Cancel the following services and arrange for them at your new home. Be sure to have receipts or checks stubs for all final payments.
Electricity
Fuel (gas/oil)
Telephone
Newspapers
Landscaping/Snow Removal
Trash pick-up
Dairy Delivery service
Laundry service
Cable service
Diaper service
UPON ARRIVAL
Be on hand, if at all possible, to check for damage while your furniture is being unloaded. If any items are damaged, notify the movers immediately and have them sign to that effect on your report.
Try to pre-plan where you want items, particularly large furniture, placed.
Make certain that all utilities and services are activated.
Open bank accounts
Enroll children in new schools
Obtain new driver’s license
Change automobile registration and insurance
With careful planning, your move should be a fun and wonderful experience.
